A new generation of gymnastics prodigies will take center stage when the Philippines hosts the 3rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics Junior World Championships from November 20 to 24 at the Manila Marriott Hotel inside Newport World Resorts in Pasay City.

Organized by the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) and sanctioned by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the Asian Gymnastics Union, the prestigious meet will feature junior standouts from around the globe — future stars who may follow in the footsteps of Olympic greats such as Simone Biles and the Philippines’ own Carlos Edriel Yulo, a double gold medalist in last year’s Paris Olympics.

“This event will be a showcase of young talent never seen anywhere before — a breeding ground where outstanding athletes can shine, excel, and display their skills,” GAP President Cynthia Carrion said during Thursday’s media launch at the Newport Performing Arts Theater.

Carrion expressed gratitude to FIG President Morinari Watanabe for once again entrusting the Philippines with hosting duties, noting that the tournament will feature men’s artistic gymnasts (MAG) aged 16 to 18 and women’s artistic gymnasts (WAG) aged 14 to 16.

With more than two months to go, Carrion revealed that close to 1,000 athletes from 79 countries have already registered — a figure that surpasses the 283 gymnasts from 64 nations who competed in the second edition in Antalya, Turkey, two years ago.

“We look forward to even more participants as the event draws near,” she said.

Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Patrick Gregorio pledged the agency’s full support for the competition, hailing it as a boost for sports tourism.

Also in attendance were PSC Commissioner Edward Hayco, FIG MAG Technical Committee President Andrew Tombs, WAG Technical Committee President Donatella Sacchi, MAG Senior Events Manager Stepane Detraz, and WAG Senior Events Manager Celine Cachemaille, who arrived earlier in the week to inspect preparations at the venue.

The Manila Marriott Grand Ballroom, which previously hosted the Asian Olympic Qualifying Tournament in 2015, will be transformed into a world-class gymnastics arena for the championships.

Carrion also unveiled the event’s official slogan, “Leap High, Flip Strong!”, which she said embodies the mental strength and positive mindset needed to succeed in the demanding sport. She assured all delegations of the famed Filipino hospitality in a safe, secure, and festive environment.

“Gymnastics continues to grow in popularity worldwide, and this tournament will be another catalyst for its rise,” Carrion said.
