Senior professional golfers will soon have a dedicated stage to showcase their skills as the Pilipinas Senior Golf Tour Organization (PSPGTO), headed by multi-titled champion Mars Pucay, formally announced its formation during the Tabloids Organization in Philippine Sports, Inc. (TOPS) ‘Usapang Sports’ on Thursday at the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Conference Room inside the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
Pucay said the group was created to give senior golfers a fair and competitive environment while providing opportunities to mentor younger players.
“Seniors are no longer given much attention in regular tours, and it’s harder for us to win against younger players,” Pucay explained. “So, we thought of having our program for Seniors.”
PSPGTO officials Mario Manubay (Chairman), Orland Sumcad (Secretary), Wendy Superal (Treasurer), Robert Pactolerin (Tournament Chairman), and Darren Evangelista (Commissioner) joined Pucay in the weekly forum sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission, Behrouz Persian Cuisine, and P:ocari Sweat.
As an initial project, the group will stage a one-day Pro-Am tournament on September 21 at the Intramuros Golf Club, with support from Manila Mayor Isko Moreno. The event is open to all senior players, regardless of membership status.
The tournament will feature four classifications—50-up, 55-up, 60-up, 65-up, plus a ladies division—using the Stableford scoring format. A total of P150,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to senior winners, while amateur partners will receive special gifts.
Manubay said the organization also aims to accredit legitimate senior players as teaching professionals to improve grassroots golf instruction.
“If the teaching is wrong from the beginning, the results will be wrong for the players,” Manubay stressed.
Evangelista added that the PSPGTO is planning more events, including a Night Golf competition in October, and is open to partnerships and sponsorships to grow the tour.
“This is just the beginning,” he said. “We thank our sponsors and welcome everyone who wants to help develop the sport,” Evangelista said.
